A Thunderbolt dock is more likely to connect to the Intel chipset and
the Intel GPU, so I'm not sure how relevant the Nvidia driver is...
Although I also notice your RTX 2000 had no working Nvidia kernel driver
at the time the bug was reported, so that explains why reinstalling a
similar Nvidia driver made some difference.
If you encounter similar problems again then please run:
sudo apt install drm-info
sudo drm_info > drminfo.txt
and attach the resulting text file here.
