Public bug reported:
There seems to be a bug somewhere in the deepest end of 'handle user input':
For an unknown and undeterministic reason, _something_ can trigger entering a
softlocked state on your computer.
I've observed it twice now that my computer (Thinkpad L14 Gen 3) becomes
unusable in exactly the same manner (once a couple weeks/months back, and once
right now):
When that happens, my computer seems to register an endless 'scroll down'
command, even though nothing is pressed.
I can still use the mouse.
However, keys don't work anymore. They are always replaced by the faulty
'scroll down' event.
A reboot fixes the problem.
I am sure it's 'scroll down' because for example, every webpage in Firefox
starts scrolling down, and in Konsole I always get the system bell of 'you've
reached the end, you cannot scroll further'.
In both cases, if I scroll up with the mouse, I'm interrupted while scrolling
up, and the scroll down command overrides my mouse action.
My most likely guess is that there is a buffer overflow in an unknown program
that overwrites the code for how to handle user inputs in itself - what program
would even be responsible for that?
It cannot be that only the buffer for storing keyboard events is overflown
into, since in that case the scroll-down action would be cancelled by pressing
any key afterward.
Since the scroll-down action takes precedence over my key presses, this is the
only reasonable reason I can come up with as to why it occurs, and why it
occurs without a specific trigger.
The buffer overflow would explain why this issue only occurs sporadically every
couple weeks/months, since it probably needs a couple of special conditions to
activate.
I don't know exactly where to put this bug - it could range from
hardware problems with this specific laptop (unlikely, the things
described above point me to a software bug) to plasma-shell (or whatever
the deepest part within the plasma framework is).
