Got it. Please consider closing this bug -- this is not related to fonttools anyway, and is in fact fixed in the new Ubuntu versions. And having it fixed in Ubuntu 22.04 is unlikely due to package scipy being in universe section instead of main section. I am not a Ubuntu Developer anyway; I work for Debian and is triaging the bug out of courtesy. It's great to hear that you already have your issue solved.
