Just for info - unplugging the usb stick and replugging and restarting networking works for me (/etc/init.d/networking restart).
A simple(ish) work around is to follow the guide on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=400236 to install the latest serialmonkey drivers (rt73 instead of the packaged rt73usb).
