I have had similar experiences. I suspect the culprit is the nm-applet and/or NetworkManager itself, which goes into a thread-lock.
I reported this so long ago, and yet nothing has been done about it. The issue appears only when repeatedly falling of a wireless network and reconnecting to it. And not always can one just kill nautilus.
