The mutter #2431 bug but may be related but lack of memory is not the
issue for this bug. This is what I see when gnome-shell and unresponsive
and consuming a full CPU core:
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 31Gi 3.1Gi 25Gi 406Mi 3.7Gi 28Gi
Swap: 8.4Gi 0B 8.4Gi
In this case chromium-browser is the only running graphical process. I
don't want to attach the full journalctl output because it is very long
and contains sensitive information like SSIDs for my home wifi. However,
I've attached the relevant excerpt from boot until WPA supplicant runs,
and then from when I open chromium starting at 10:02:58. I think these
lines are particularly relevant:
Jun 04 10:03:28 mica kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] Resetting rcs0 for
preemption time out
Jun 04 10:03:28 mica kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* GT0: rcs0 reset
request timed out: {request: 00000001, RESET_CTL: 00000001}
Jun 04 10:03:28 mica kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] GPU HANG: ecode
12:1:84dffffb, in chrome [7689]
Jun 04 10:03:28 mica kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] GPU error state saved to
/sys/class/drm/card1/error
For clarity, when I first encountered this bug I was unsure how to
reproduce it but I can now trigger it consistently using the steps
described above. I have replicated it on two separate machines running
Ubuntu 24.04.4, a Framework 13 (my primary machine and where all this
output has come from) and a Thinkpad Z13 Gen 2 (just to verify it wasn't
isolated to that particular machine). Note that Ubuntu 24.04 is
officially supported on the Framework 13.

I would appreciate confirmation as to whether this bug can be replicated
on other machines. If you are unsure how to reproduce I have uploaded a
screencast here that shows gnome-shell hanging:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQi2gFc0Nxk
In this instance gnome-shell did not hang indefinitely, only for about
35 seconds, so I was able to recover the session and end the screencast
gracefully.
