My patch resolves this concern. At most, it will run twice. (The first time by 
creating a deletion from normal text, the second time by changing the deletion 
itself.)

My patch mostly follows suggestion #2.

At the code level, there is no distinction between the two. You simply have the 
ability to 'replace' whatever the search has found.
