Please try a different desktop environment like KDE so we can figure out
if the problem is originating in the kernel/hardware.

Please also add MUTTER_DEBUG=kms to /etc/environment and reboot. That
might tell us what's going wrong with the kernel interaction but it's
not as simple as trying other compositors. Presumably you will need to
reboot after the freeze and then collect a log with:

  journalctl -b-1 > prev-boot.txt
