Public bug reported:
1) Ubuntu release:
Description: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
Release: 24.04
2) Package versions:
nvidia-driver-595-open: 595.71.05-0ubuntu0.24.04.1
ubuntu-drivers-common: 1:0.9.7.6ubuntu3.7
nvidia-prime: 0.8.17.2
Kernel: 6.17.0-35-generic
3) Expected:
Both external HDMI monitors (LG FULL HD + ONN ONA18HO015C) detected and
active immediately after login on RTX 3050 desktop, as they do in Windows
on the same hardware.
4) Actual:
Monitors fail intermittently after reboot (every few weeks). Two symptoms:
a) Total failure: xrandr shows only None-1 (simple-framebuffer),
nvidia-smi shows Disp.A: Off, monitors have no signal.
b) Partial failure: xrandr shows HDMI-0 and HDMI-1 both connected
(3840x1080), but left monitor (ONN on HDMI-1) stays dark until:
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --off
sleep 1
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --primary --left-of HDMI-0
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --right-of HDMI-1
Hardware: MSI MS-7522, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB — no Intel iGPU
(lspci shows only NVIDIA VGA controller)
Session: X11 + GNOME + LightDM
Root causes identified:
- prime-select reverts to on-demand or intel despite no Intel GPU
- NVIDIA kernel module loads after LightDM/X starts
- Xorg log: (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)
- /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf contained options nvidia-drm modeset=0
- Stale /etc/X11/xorg.conf from nvidia-xconfig (driver 550 era)
Workaround: disable xorg.conf, set nvidia_drm modeset=1, prime-select nvidia,
add nvidia-drm.modeset=1 to GRUB, reboot.
