I've now downloaded the ISO for Hardy Alpha 4, AMD64 version, and have
just booted from it.
At first, the problem seemed to persist: In the Voice Recorder, the same
as before happens: The playback of my recording from the microphone
seems silent at first, and if I listen very carefully, I can hear my
recorded voice extremely faint.
Then, I looked at the volume control. The menu now offers, in 'File'|'Change
device' five devices. I didn't have these before. I find the following
confusing multitude of sliders:
Device 0 "HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer)":
at first, there was only one tab, labelled "Playback" and containing:
Headphone, PCM, Front Line, Front Mic (!), CD.
Then, I went to 'Preferences' and made all channels visible. Now I see
three tabs:
Playback: Headphone, PCM, Front, Front Line, Front Mic, Front Mic
Boost, Surround, Center, LFE, Side, Line-in,
CD, Microphone, Mic Boost, IEC958, Aux, Analog Mix
Recording: Capture, Capture-1, Capture-2, Digital
Options: two drop-down boxes: IEC958 Playback Source, Input Source
Device 1 "Analog Devices AD1988B (OSS Mixer)"
two tabs:
Playback: Volume, Line-in, Microphone, CD, PCM-2, In-gain, Line-1
Recording: Digital-1

After playing with the sliders, it suddenly worked. To isolate which
slider is the right one, I have now moved all of them to zero and the
moved up the ones I needed.
It's a bit confusing but it seems that I can record from the front microphone
only if:
- in Device 0, the option 'Input Source' is set to 'Front Mic'. This option is
present thrice. I take the first, and assume that it corresponds to the channel
'Capture', the other two to channel 'Capture 1' and 'Capture 2'
- in Device 0, 'Recording' tab, 'Capture' is slided up and 'Digital'
- in Devices 3 and 4, 'Master' is slided up
The following makes no difference:
- The input selection in 'Sound Recorder'
- All the sliders labelled 'Microphone' and the like in the 'Playback' tab of
device 0.
This is all quite confusing. Where do all these channels come from?
Maybe you can help me understand it, and tell me whether there is a way
of getting this to run in Gutsy. I do not want to update to Hardy Alpha.
