Normally we'd say you should try a new cable

DisplayPort is usually good enough. Usually...
Other than that, it sounds like you're using the open source Nouveau
driver (which you have to in a live session) so that could be part of
the problem.
If you decide to install Ubuntu permanently then please use the 'ubuntu-
drivers' command to install an official Nvidia driver. There's a good
chance using an official driver will fix it, although trying a new cable
may also be useful.
