Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub
I don't know if there was an update to GRUB lately (Dec 2007 / Jan 2008) but in the last 2 weeks my Box (details following) hangs at "Grub loading, please wait..." if I try to do a "cold" boot (i.e. the PC was off for at least 30 minutes), at this point nothing can be done, but if I press the reset button then it boots regularly without an error. At first I thought it was the bios so I tried to change boot order, oveclock options, etc. but there was nothing to do, then I stumbled upon a Gentoo forum where a guy was reporting a similar problem and the solution he found was to compile GRUB from scratch with different CFLAGS. I tried to force a reinstall of the grub package from both synaptic and console but there was nothing to do, then I tried resetting my meni.lst with sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r) but it didn't fix the problem... At this point I downloaded the "grub" package for Feisty from packages.ubuntu.com (grub v. 0.97-20ubuntu6 for amd64) and voila!!! now GRUB boots everytime I turn on or reset my box! O_O There must be something wrong in the latest grub package for Gutsy (grub v. 0.97-29ubuntu4). Details on my beloved Box: CPU: AMD64 X2 3800+ RAM: 2.5 Gb DDR2 Motherboard: ASUS A8NE with NForce 3 HDDs: 80 Gb Maxtor (Primary IDE master, hda1 ext3 partition with Ubuntu Gutsy for amd64), 40Gb Maxtor (Primary IDE slave, hdb1 NTFS with Windows XP SP2), 250 Gb Maxtor (Primary SATA, sda1 ext3, it's my backup device) Kernel: 2.6.22-14-generic amd64 (Ubuntu Gutsy with all the updates 23/01/2008) The same things happens on my mother's box (details following), it runs latest Kubuntu Gutsy, and this one is a 32bit machine, the only difference is that on this one GRUB hangs from time to time, it's not a constant behaviour like on my box but the problem is exactly the same, i.e. when it hangs she just need to press the reset button and everything works. My mother's box details: CPU: AMD Sempron 1500+ RAM: 750 Mb DDR Motherboard: ASRock K7S41 HDDs: 80 Gb Maxtor (Primary IDE master, hda1 ext3 with Kubuntu Gutsy for i386), 120 Gb Maxtor (Primary IDE slave, hdb1 ext3, backup device) Kernel: 2.6.22-14-generic i386 (Kubuntu Gutsy with all the updates 23/01/2008) P.s.: I know there's another bug that is similar to this one, but the guy who has reported it says that GRUB loads after 20/30 secs or that it doesn't load at all, you can see the difference... ** Affects: grub (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: grub I don't know if there was an update to GRUB lately (Dec 2007 / Jan 2008) but in the last 2 weeks my Box (details following) hangs at "Grub loading, please wait..." if I try to do a "cold" boot (i.e. the PC was off for at least 30 minutes), at this point nothing can be done, but if I press the reset button then it boots regularly without an error.
