Yes before HWE 6.14 , you would not ( in my experience ) get a Kernel
panic at next boot because of a failed DKMS driver compile for a kernel
update.

Now a simple incompatible DKMS driver ( even loaded by the user ) might
get your system unbootable

This behaviour should be IMO a high priority problem to solve
