Public bug reported:
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS repeatedly loses network connectivity because the
Intel AX200 iwlwifi firmware crashes and performs a software reset.
Expected result:
The wireless adapter should remain connected and pass traffic normally when
NetworkManager Wi-Fi power saving is enabled.
Actual result:
The firmware repeatedly crashes, sometimes approximately every 15 seconds. DNS
lookups and IPv4/IPv6 HTTPS connections time out during each reset.
Relevant kernel messages:
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x0.
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Loaded firmware version: 77.f39cc7f9.0 cc-a0-77.ucode

iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Device error - SW reset
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: restart completed
Hardware/software:
- System: PELADN HA-4
- Wireless adapter: Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200, PCI ID 8086:2723 rev 1a
- Driver: iwlwifi
- Kernel: 7.0.0-30-generic
- Firmware: 77.f39cc7f9.0 cc-a0-77.ucode
- linux-firmware: 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.29
- Access point: WPA2, 5 GHz, channel 44
- Signal strength: 100 percent
The current boot accumulated 75 firmware crashes before applying the
workaround. A previous long-running boot recorded 1,836 crashes. The issue was
also observed with Ubuntu kernels in the
6.17 and 7.0 series and firmware revisions 77.b405f9d4.0 and 77.f39cc7f9.0.
Before workaround:
- HTTPS: 10 succeeded and 5 timed out
- Some DNS lookups failed
- IPv6 test showed 40 percent packet loss
- Both IPv4 and IPv6 were affected
- Routes, DHCP, gateway and DNS assignments were correct
Workaround:
I disabled Wi-Fi power saving in the NetworkManager profile and reconnected:
nmcli connection modify <connection-profile> 802-11-wireless.powersave 2
After reconnecting:
- HTTPS: 40/40 succeeded
- DNS: 10/10 succeeded
- IPv6: 20/20 packets received, 0 percent loss, approximately 18 ms average
latency
- No additional iwlwifi firmware resets occurred during the stress test and
observation period
The final reset occurred immediately before NetworkManager activated the
connection with power saving disabled. This strong before/after result suggests
a power-state or access-point
interaction in iwlwifi or its firmware.
The hostname, SSID, network addresses, MAC addresses, connection UUID
and serial identifiers have intentionally been omitted from this
description.
