In the meantime, I noticed that enabling systemd-networkd in the initramfs seems to cause it to also be active in the running system (beside NetworkManager on Ubuntu Desktop). It might also cause boot to hang for two minutes until systemd-networkd-wait-online.service times out. So to achieve a clean state, systemd-networkd.service and systemd- networkd-wait-online.service have to be stopped and disabled in the running system.
Benjamin, this all looks very brittle.
