## Summary
On a Dell Precision 5690 (Meteor Lake, SoundWire: rt713 link0 headset +
rt1316 link1/2 amps + rt1713 link3, topology
sof-mtl-rt713-l0-rt1316-l12-rt1713-l3.tplg, SOF firmware 2.14.1.1), headphone
jack output is completely silent on kernel 7.0.0-31-generic.
The identical setup worked correctly on 7.0.0-30-generic and was also broken
(same symptoms) on 7.0.0-28-generic — i.e. this regression was fixed once in
-30 and has returned in -31.
## Symptoms (on 7.0.0-31-generic)
- 3.5mm headphone jack output is completely silent, despite:
- Jack detected; PipeWire/WirePlumber correctly routes to
HiFi__Headphones__sink as default.
- All relevant mixer controls verified on and at max: Headphone [on], rt713
FU05 87/87 [on], Pre/Post Mixer Jack Out 45/45.
- Direct ALSA playback to the codec (speaker-test -D
hw:CARD=sofsoundwire,DEV=0 -c 2 -t sine -f 440) completes with zero errors and
normal period timing — the DSP streams, nothing reaches the jack. (Verified
with the internal speaker hard-muted at the
mixer to exclude leakage: total silence.)
- Kernel log shows a fully clean SOF/DSP init — no errors, no SoundWire
timeouts, all FW polls successful.
- Internal speakers (rt1316, ALSA device 2) do produce sound.
- Restarting PipeWire/WirePlumber/pipewire-pulse changes nothing.
This "streams fine, zero kernel errors, jack silent" signature is exactly
what I observed and worked around on 7.0.0-28 (booting 7.0.0-30 restored both
playback and capture). On -28, capture on rt713-dmic (ALSA device 4) also
showed a saturated constant
buzz (identical peak in every 0.1s window) — capture was not retested on -31.
## Regression window
- 7.0.0-28-generic: BROKEN — jack silent, dmic buzz
- 7.0.0-30-generic: WORKS — playback + capture healthy
- 7.0.0-31-generic: BROKEN — jack silent
Broken in -28, fixed by -30, broken again in -31.

## Suspicions
- -31 pulls upstream stable through v7.0.14; 7.0.10 contained "soundwire:
cadence: Clear message complete before signaling waiting thread" — plausibly
related to the -28 → -30 fix; the -31 re-breakage has no rt713/rt1316/sdw entry
in the Ubuntu changelog,
so it likely rides along in a stable merge or config delta.

## Steps to reproduce
1. Boot 7.0.0-31-generic on a Dell Precision 5690.
2. Plug headphones into the 3.5mm jack.
3. speaker-test -D hw:CARD=sofsoundwire,DEV=0 -c 2 -t sine -f 440 → completes
cleanly, no audible output.
4. Reboot into 7.0.0-30-generic, repeat → tone is audible.

Apport data (AlsaInfo, dmesg, kernel config, PipeWire state) collected while
booted into the broken 7.0.0-31 kernel.
