Public bug reported:
Summary
-------
Connecting to this machine via GNOME Remote Desktop (RDP, system/headless
"Remote Login" mode) shows persistent rectangular rendering artifacts: stale
blocks, ghost overlays, and corruption of previously-drawn regions. The LOCAL
display is unaffected. The corruption is in the captured framebuffer
(mutter -> PipeWire -> gnome-remote-desktop), i.e. upstream of the H.264
encoder.
Bisect (clean, identical hardware/session)
-------------------------------------------
- BAD: mesa 26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3 (resolute-updates) -> corruption reproduces
- GOOD: mesa 26.0.3-1ubuntu1 (resolute) -> no corruption
Downgrading exactly these six packages to 26.0.3-1ubuntu1 eliminates the
artifacts; re-upgrading reintroduces them:
libegl-mesa0, libgbm1, libgl1-mesa-dri, libglx-mesa0,
mesa-libgallium, mesa-vulkan-drivers
gnome-remote-desktop (50.2-0ubuntu0.1) was held constant across the test, so
this is isolated to mesa.
Relationship to LP #2152207
---------------------------
This looks like the same front-buffer / EGL-GBM corruption class as
LP #2152207, but appears to be a DISTINCT, still-unfixed manifestation:
- #2152207 (mesa Resolute: Fix Committed) is scoped to LOCAL multi-monitor /
MST configurations. This machine is a SINGLE headless RDP session, no local
multi-monitor.
- It still reproduces on 26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3, which already carries the
#2152207 "egl-gbm ... front buffer BO" patch series.
- The characteristic #2152207 log signature ("gbm_surface_lock_front_buffer
failed" / "buffer age ... error 3003") is NOT present in our journals; the
link here is by symptom and mesa bisect, not by that message.
Environment
-----------
- Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (resolute), GNOME Shell 50.1, Wayland session
- GPU: AMD Cezanne (Radeon Vega, "renoir"), amdgpu; Mesa radeonsi (Gallium)
- Kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic
- Server: gnome-remote-desktop 50.2-0ubuntu0.1 (--system daemon, RDP)
- FreeRDP: libfreerdp3 3.31.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.26.04.1
- RDP client: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe), Windows 11
(negotiates H.264 / AVC444 progressive)
Reproduce
---------
1. On 26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3, connect via mstsc (system Remote Login) -> corruption.
2. Downgrade the six packages to 26.0.3-1ubuntu1, restart
gnome-remote-desktop.service, reconnect -> clean.
3. Re-upgrade to 26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3, reconnect -> corruption returns.
Impact
------
26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3 is the current resolute-updates mesa, so RDP users on this
pocket are affected. Currently pinned to 26.0.3-1ubuntu1 as a workaround.
