With the release of MySQL 9.7, and the push toward the removal of
default-mysql-* packages, MariaDB and MySQL should no longer be
considered interchangeable. In order to allow packages depending on one
or the other to be installed at the same time, mysql-server and mariadb-
server along with their dependencies should also be installable at the
same time.
To do this, mariadb-server will need to move its runtime directory from
/run/mysqld to /run/mariadbd and its config directory from /etc/mysql to
/etc/mariadb. Likewise, remaining MariaDB symlinks used to achieve
compatibility should be moved to the mariadb-compat package. Lastly,
both mysql-server and mariadb-server binaries with conflicting names
will need to be updated, with alternatives symlinks to point to them.
This update will make the mysql-common package no longer necessary, as
my.cnf alternatives will no longer be needed. Once the removal of
default-mysql-* is complete, mysql-defaults can be removed completely.
