Summary: System becomes completely unresponsive after suspend (s2idle) —
requires hard power-off. Suspect linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic, as issue
began ~2 days ago.
Hardware: ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 AMD (Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U w/ Radeon 780M),
BIOS R2FET69W (1.49)
OS: Ubuntu 24.04, kernel 7.0.0-31-generic (HWE)
Description:
Over the past 2 days, the laptop has frozen completely after suspending
(s2idle) — screen off, no response to power button, keyboard, or trackpad. The
only recovery is a hard power-off via the power button.
Reproduces both via lid close and via automatic suspend triggered by
system idle timeout (i.e. leaving the laptop open and idle) — not lid-
switch-specific.
journalctl -b -1 shows the last line before each freeze is PM: suspend
entry (s2idle), with no resume sequence or error logged afterward.
Checked /var/log/unattended-upgrades/: kernel was auto-upgraded from
7.0.0-30-generic to 7.0.0-31-generic (7.0.0-31.31~24.04.1) via
unattended-upgrades. The onset of this issue lines up with that timing,
so I suspect the new kernel, but I haven't confirmed it by reproducing
on 7.0.0-30 yet.
Wireless is a WCN6855 on ath11k_pci. Tried setting ath11k_pci
wow_enable=1 as a workaround (per known ath11k suspend/resume issues on
other Lenovo AMD ThinkPads); this did not resolve the freezing.
Steps to reproduce:
Suspend the laptop (via lid close, idle timeout, or systemctl suspend)
Attempt to resume
System does not wake; requires hard power-off
Expected: System resumes normally from suspend.
Actual: System is completely unresponsive after suspend; requires hard reboot.
