The biggest problem there is that the Nvidia drivers, despite being "open", have a closed firmware and Ubuntu Developers don't have any control over it besides the packaging. So, it's not like nobody cares, it's more like nobody on the Ubuntu level can do anything about it. If possible, it's the kind of thing that needs to be reported directly to Nvidia.
Also, I don't think it's an Nvidia problem at all, but an ACPI problem since display brightness is related to power control, not the Nvidia graphics processor. However, before we start filing bugs, maybe we should be seeking support instead? A bug report isn't about seeking support, but about fixing something for *everyone* that can be reproduced.
