** Description changed: Incomplete ---------- I'm setting this as incomplete since I may try to fix some additional issues in Ubuntu 26.10 first to perhaps avoid an SRU there or reduce the size of the SRU. I also need to finish developing the test cases. Impact ------ 0.23 is a bugfix release of spice-vdagent. It includes a crash fix. Perhaps this is LP: #2015405, but that bug is missing some key details and some crashes may be hard to reproduce even though they consistently happen with the right triggers. A crash was also reported for 22.04 LTS and 23.04 as LP: #1965173 but there is even less detail there. It includes multiple fixes to the systemd service handling which can significantly improve how well spice-vdagent works by default for various desktop environments. Test Plan 1 ----------- spice-vdagent is a service that runs in a VM. The host environment doesn't matter. I'll use GNOME Boxes running from Ubuntu 26.10 or similar, but you could also virt-manager. 1. Install Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS inside the VM. Reboot the VM and log in. 2. Verify that these features work: 2a. Changing the size of the VM window changes the screen resolution inside the VM. 2b. Copying text outside the VM also copies that text to the clipboard inside the VM. 2c. Copying [different] text inside the VM also copies that text to the clipboard outside the VM. 3. Install the updated spice-vdagent inside the VM. Reboot the VM and login. 4. Repeat step 2 to ensure that things still work. Test Plan 2 ----------- - 1. Install ______ inside the VM. Reboot the VM and log in. - 2. Verify that these features work: - 2a. Changing the size of the VM window changes the screen resolution inside the VM. - 2b. Copying text outside the VM also copies that text to the clipboard inside the VM. - 2c. Copying [different] text inside the VM also copies that text to the clipboard outside the VM. - 3. Install the updated spice-vdagent inside the VM. Reboot the VM and login. - 4. Repeat step 2 to ensure that things still work. + For this plan, we'll use virt-manager since we need to tweak a setting that is more awkward to do with GNOME Boxes - Test Plan 3 - ----------- - Kubuntu? + 0. sudo apt install virt-manager + 1. Open virt-manager. Click File> New Virtual Machine + 2. For Step 1, Choose Import existing disk image. + 3. For Step 2. Browse. Browse local. Select the downloaded image. You can select Ubuntu 24.04 LTS in the Choose the operating system section. + 4. The defaults in Step 3 are probably ok. You need a few GB of memory to run the VM. + 5. Step 4. Name it something like Ubuntu Touch 24.04. Choose Customize configuration before install. Finish. + 6. In the configuration screen, in the left sidebar. choose Video Virtio. Enable 3D acceleration. Click Apply. Then in the left sidebar, click Display Spice, change Listen type to None and enable OpenGL. Click Apply. Then Begin Installation. + 7. This image has a strange bug where after booting for the first time, the mouse will get stuck the first time click. Click Virtual Machine>Shut Down>Force Reset. Now finish the welcome wizard. There is another bug where the host and guest mouse cursors don't have their location synced. Moving the cursor to the bottom right corner seems to help. + 8. After finishing the wizard, resize the VM window. Note that the guest screen resolution doesn't change. + 9. Install the updated spice-vdagent inside the VM. Reboot the VM and login. Repeat #8. Resizing should work correctly now (although this doesn't fix the bugs from #7). Where Problems Could Occur -------------------------- Although this is a new upstream release, the new release is a bugfix release. The biggest change is to the systemd services. If something is broken, it could cause the spice-vdagent service to not run automatically in appropriately configured VMs as expected. On the other hand, the current situation is that spice-vdagent runs automatically in Ubuntu Desktop, - but not in ____. As long as this is confirmed to be fixed while Ubuntu - Desktop still works, it is more likely that this SRU is an improvement. + but not in Ubuntu Touch. As long as this is confirmed to be fixed while + Ubuntu Desktop still works, it is more likely that this SRU is an + improvement. Other Info ---------- Full list of upstream changes as git commits https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/spice/linux/vd_agent/-/compare/spice-vdagent-0.22.1...spice-vdagent-0.23.0 Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is also affected by these issues but I don't plan to do an SRU for it at this time.
