Well, this was interesting. Verification failed: wlan0 adapter not present after booting rebuilt initrd, and it turns out this is broken on stonking as well. I hadn't noticed, because I'd failed to note the initrd *hadn't* actually rebuilt on the stonking box (because ubuntu- raspi-settings isn't triggering update-initramfs, LP: #2168417).
