Public bug reported:
Since mutter 50 (MR !4877 made framebuffer scaling non-experimental),
meta_monitor_manager_native_get_default_layout_mode() always returns
LOGICAL. The stored-config lookup at startup builds its key with the
default layout mode, and the key comparison includes layout_mode. As a
result, a config saved via ApplyMonitorsConfig (method 2, layout-mode 2)
is written to ~/.config/monitors.xml as
<layoutmode>physical</layoutmode> but never matches at the next login.
mutter falls back to a logical config.
MR !4877 says physical behaviour "can still be achieved using gdctl set
--layout-mode=physical", but there is no way to make that persist across
logins (or apply it to GDM) without an autostart script.
Steps to reproduce
1. gdctl set --layout-mode=physical …, or ApplyMonitorsConfig with method 2 and
{'layout-mode': <uint32 2>}.
2. Confirm monitors.xml contains the physical config.
3. Log out and log in.
Expected: the stored physical layout is restored.
Actual: the session starts in logical mode.
This matters because physical mode is currently the only workaround for
