Public bug reported: Since upgrading from linux-image 7.0.0-34-generic to 7.0.0-38-generic, I get brief flashes of garbage horizontal bands on screen. Booting back into 7.0.0-34 makes the problem go away. The card itself appears healthy.
== Symptoms == Brief flashes of corrupted horizontal bands, several times a day. Seen on both connected monitors (one on DisplayPort, one on HDMI), at different times. Most frequent on the HDMI monitor while it is showing a YouTube video, often with a game (Warframe, via Proton) running on the other monitor. Also seen once on the DisplayPort monitor during gameplay. Nothing is logged at the moment of a flash: no GPU resets, ring timeouts or page faults. == Regression == Last good: 7.0.0-34-generic First bad: 7.0.0-38-generic (installed 2026-10-05; the flashes started the same day) On 7.0.0-38, every boot logs: workqueue: dm_irq_work_func [amdgpu] hogged CPU for >10000us N times, consider switching to WQ_UNBOUND (up to 19 times in one session). None of the earlier boots on 7.0.0-34 logged this, and neither has the current boot on 7.0.0-34. == Likely cause == 7.0.0-38 picked up this commit from the upstream stable patchset 2026-08-26 (LP: #2165189): drm/amd/display: Handle struct drm_plane_state.ignore_damage_clips (upstream ac11060c6d4959e2d4ceada037d2e1e1bfcf6645) The same commit caused the same symptom (transient coloured bands on RDNA2/3/4, including the RX 9070 XT) in Fedora kernel 7.1.6. The fix landed in Fedora 7.1.8: Red Hat bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2512106 Upstream: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/work_items/5567 Fix commits: 4c97779ca064e3ac878f425dcd40209e94443392, 6fa83ad41720069308990abd7a42844606c153e8 Please backport the fixes (or revert ac11060c6d49) in the 7.0 kernel. Another user reports the same 7.0.0-34 -> 7.0.0-38 regression on Linux Mint: https://github.com/linuxmint/linuxmint/issues/920 == Ruled out == Hardware: a 25-minute Vulkan stress test (vkmark) showed no artifacts or kernel errors. Junction temperature peaked at 94 C, memory at 72 C, and power peaked at 304 W. The PCIe link stayed at Gen5 x16. Memory clock switching: during one flash the memory clock stayed at its maximum (1258 MHz). Browser video decoding: disabling hardware acceleration in the browser (Brave) did not help. Cables/monitors: two different monitors on separate cables and ports are affected. == System == Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, GNOME Shell 50.1 on Wayland, with fractional scaling enabled GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (Navi 48, 1002:7550), VBIOS 113-APM7604SL-104 Display Core v3.2.369 on DCN 4.0.1, DMUB firmware 0x0A000800 Mesa 26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3, linux-firmware 20260319.git217ca6e4 Also has an Intel UHD 770 iGPU, with no displays connected to it Monitors: AOC Q2577W on DP (2560x1440 @ 60 Hz), iiyama PL2451 on HDMI (1920x1080 @ 60 Hz) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 26.04 Package: linux-image-7.0.0-34-generic 7.0.0-34.34 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 7.0.0-34.34-generic 7.0.14 Uname: Linux 7.0.0-34-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.34.1-0ubuntu0.1 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Wed Oct 7 13:35:43 2026 InstallationDate: Installed on 2026-07-03 (96 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 26.04 "Resolute Raccoon" - Release amd64 (20260423.1) IwDevWlo1Link: Not connected.
