Public bug reported:
**Title:** HEIC images fail to open on fresh Ubuntu installations
without additional decoder packages
**Description:**
I experienced an issue on two different computers running Ubuntu 26.04.
HEIC photos taken with my iPhone could not be opened using the default
GNOME Image Viewer.
The following error occurred:
`DecoderPluginError(Unspecified)`
On both computers, the issue was resolved after installing these
packages:
`sudo apt install libheif1 libheif-plugin-libde265 libheif-examples
heif-gdk-pixbuf`
**Expected behavior:**
HEIC images should open without requiring users to manually install
additional decoder packages.
Alternatively, Ubuntu should offer to install the missing decoder
automatically.
**Additional information:**
I used the standard installation option. I suspect that the required
HEIC decoder packages may not be installed by default.
The same issue occurred on two separate Ubuntu installations.
Thank you for looking into this issue!
