On my laptop, this issue occurred after upgrading from Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04 using the standard upgrade procedure. I found myself automatically logged in as the `gdm-greeter` user, with no way to interact with the desktop.
The workaround posted here initially resolved the issue, but I noticed errors in the journal related to the `gdm-greeter` user. I noticed that switching to the NVIDIA GPU with `prime-select nvidia` made the problem disappear. Conversely, switching back to the integrated Intel GPU caused the problem to reappear on the next reboot. In my case, I suspect the issue may have been related to the HWE 6.17 kernel I had been using on Ubuntu 24.04, which was not upgraded as part of the distribution upgrade. After switching to the 7.0 kernel, the problem disappeared, and I was able to remove the workaround. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2143268 Title: gnome-shell launches in desktop mode instead of greeter mode To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/2143268/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
