Public bug reported:

I just ran Software Updater on 26.04.1 originally Ubuntu MATE 24.04.x.
I received "Package operation failed. The installation or removal of a
software package failed."

I ran "sudo apt upgrade" in a terminal and saw the following:

"Unpacking rust-coreutils (0.10.0-1ubuntu2~26.04.1) over
(0.8.0-0ubuntu3) ... dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/rust-coreutils_0.10.0-1ub
untu2~26.04.1_amd64.deb (--unpack): unable to make backup link of
./usr/lib/cargo/bin/coreutils/sync before insta lling new version: Too
many links"

I got this exact same error scenario about 4-6 months ago, so this is a
recurring issue. I solved it then by just deleting files pointed out in
the errors, like sync above, and eventually got the upgrade to complete.
I'm too tired to do the same again tonight.
