Public bug reported:
1) Ubuntu Release:
Description: Ubuntu 26.10
Release: 26.10
2) Package Versions:
- Failing Package: linux-image-7.3.0-9-generic (Version: 7.3.0-9.9)
- Working Package: linux-image-7.0.0-38-generic (Version: 7.0.0-38.38)
- Device Tree: x1e80100-lenovo-yoga-slim7x.dtb
- Machine Model: Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite / X1E80100)
- Root Filesystem: LUKS2 full-disk encryption with LVM
Package policy for linux-image-7.3.0-9-generic:
linux-image-7.3.0-9-generic:
Installed: 7.3.0-9.9
Candidate: 7.3.0-9.9
Version table:
*** 7.3.0-9.9 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu stonking/main arm64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Kernel version signature (/proc/version_signature):
Ubuntu 7.0.0-38.38-generic 7.0.14
3) What I expected to happen:
During early boot, the initramfs should initialize:
- The built-in keyboard (hid-over-i2c 048D:8987 via i2c_hid_of on 3-003a) to
allow manual LUKS password entry.
- The Type-C / USB subsystem (dwc3-qcom, pmic-glink) to discover external USB
drives (such as a LUKS key drive) and unlock the encrypted volume.
This works as expected on kernel 7.0.0-38-generic.
4) What happened instead:
On kernel 7.3.0-9-generic, both input methods fail completely during early boot:
A. Built-in Keyboard:
i2c_hid_of fails to fetch the HID descriptor on bus 3-003a with:
[ 2.275073] i2c_hid_of 3-003a: unexpected HID descriptor bcdVersion (0x0000)
[ 2.280361] i2c_hid_of 3-003a: Failed to fetch the HID Descriptor
Because the descriptor transaction returns 0x0000, i2c-hid aborts
registration, leaving the laptop keyboard completely unresponsive in
early boot console.
B. USB / Type-C Controller:
PMIC GLINK and Type-C connectors report repeated device link errors:
[ 1.901394] qcom_pmic_glink pmic-glink: Failed to create device link (0x180)
...
[ 1.908961] qcom_pmic_glink pmic-glink: Failed to create device link (0x180)
...
[ 2.386909] qcom_pmic_glink pmic-glink: Failed to create device link (0x180)
...
External USB drives (including USB keyfiles) are never detected in
initramfs.
C. Indefinite Hang:
Because both automatic keyfile decryption (USB) and manual password input
(keyboard) fail, dracut initqueue reaches its 120s timeout and loops
indefinitely:
Warning: dracut-initqueue: timeout, still waiting for following initqueue
hooks:
... /run/systemd/generator/systemd-cryptsetup@*.service ...
5) Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot kernel 7.3.0-9-generic on a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x with LUKS encryption
enabled.
2. Observe that at the LUKS prompt, the built-in keyboard produces no
keystrokes and plugged-in USB drives are never recognized.
