Public bug reported:
Expected behavior: Internal speakers and headphone jack should be
available as audio output devices.
Actual behavior: Only "Dummy Output" is shown. Internal codec (Realtek
ALC287) fails to initialize.
Ubuntu version:
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon), kernel 7.0.0-38-generic
Description:
On Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 (21CCS9K500) running Ubuntu 26.04
LTS with kernel 7.0.0, the internal audio codec (Realtek ALC287)
frequently fails to initialize at boot, resulting in "Dummy Output" as
the only available audio device.
Symptoms:
At boot, hda codecs found, mask 4 instead of expected mask 5
codec #0 probe error, ret: -5 appears in dmesg
SoundWire links not enabled
When the bug occurs, aplay -l shows only HDMI and Thunderbolt Dock USB audio,
no analog output:
card 0: sofhdadsp [sof-hda-dsp], device 1: HDMI1 (*) [PHL 271V8LAB]
card 0: sofhdadsp [sof-hda-dsp], device 2: HDMI2 (*) [HDMI 2]
card 0: sofhdadsp [sof-hda-dsp], device 3: HDMI3 (*) [HDMI 3]
card 1: USB [ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock USB], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
The problem occurs frequently when disconnecting a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock
The problem also occurs after using Bluetooth audio output
Sometimes resolves after many reboots and restarting the ALSA daemon, but
behavior is unpredictable
Workaround:
sudo alsa reload
systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber
Not reliable — sometimes requires many reboots before audio works again.
Relevant dmesg output:
sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl: codec #0 probe error, ret: -5
sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl: SoundWire links not enabled
sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl: hda codecs found, mask 4
sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl: using HDA machine driver skl_hda_dsp_generic
