Public bug reported: [ Impact ]
Mesa 25.2.8 in Ubuntu 24.04 lacks support for AMD GFX11.7 graphics and VCN 5.3.0 video hardware. Affected systems may use software rendering and decoding instead of hardware acceleration. This particularly affects core24 browser snaps using mesa-2404 (https://github.com/canonical/mesa-2404), which supplies drivers from Noble’s Mesa packages. Updating the host alone does not fix these snaps; mesa-2404 must be rebuilt with the updated packages. The update backports RadeonSI, RADV and ACO support for GFX11.7, plus VCN 5.3.0 identification and decoder setup. [ Test Plan ] Use a GFX1170 system with VCN 5.3.0 and supporting kernel and firmware. 1. With the existing packages, record glxinfo -B, vulkaninfo --summary and vainfo. Confirm the missing graphics or video acceleration. 2. Install the candidate Mesa packages from noble-proposed, including mesa-va-drivers, and reboot. 3. Confirm OpenGL uses the AMD GPU rather than llvmpipe, Vulkan exposes the GPU through RADV, and vainfo lists the expected decode profiles. 4. Run glmark2 and vkcube. Check for corruption, crashes, hangs and GPU resets. 5. Play H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 samples supported by the hardware. Confirm actual hardware decoding through player diagnostics, including seeking and repeated playback. Codec enumeration alone is insufficient. 6. Test a core24 browser connected to a mesa-2404 test revision containing the updated packages. Confirm accelerated compositing, WebGL and supported video decoding through browser diagnostics. 7. Repeat graphics and playback tests on existing AMD hardware, particularly GFX11, GFX11.5 and GFX12. Include suspend/resume and a 32-bit application where applicable. 8. Confirm the complete package builds, including Nouveau’s Rust bindings. [ Where problems could occur ] Shared AMD surface handling and ACO changes could cause rendering corruption, incorrect shader results or GPU hangs on existing hardware. Incorrect VCN identification or decoder configuration could cause playback failures, corrupted frames or video-engine resets. Existing VCN generations also need regression testing. Once incorporated into mesa-2404, regressions could affect browser rendering and playback or force software fallbacks.
