Same symptom as in the photo in this report, on Ubuntu 26.04 (kernel
7.0.0-42, systemd 259.9, plymouth 24.004.60+git20250831.4a3c171d-0ubuntu8,
theme bgrt, encrypted LVM root, Intel i915). Pressing Esc during shutdown
shows boxes where the unit names are; the descriptions are readable.
Without "quiet splash" the same messages are clean on the kernel console.
Here the initramfs is built by dracut 110 (45plymouth module). It contains
DejaVuSansMono.ttf but not the bold file. Resolving fonts against only the
initramfs fonts gives monospace:bold -> Ubuntu Sans Mono (variable font)
instead of DejaVu Sans Mono Bold, which is what the running system picks.
Fix that worked for me:
echo 'install_items+="
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/dejavu/DejaVuSansMono-Bold.ttf "' \
| sudo tee /etc/dracut.conf.d/plymouth-bold-font.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u -k $(uname -r)
The only change in the initramfs was that one file. After a reboot, the
shutdown log renders correctly. So the missing bold face seems to be at
least one cause, on dracut-built initramfs. I did not test the timing
workaround mentioned earlier in this bug, and I have not read Plymouth's
log-view code, so the cause is inferred from the test above.
