Public bug reported:
## Problem
The system hard-hangs (requires SysRq / power cycle) after roughly 15-25 minutes
of uptime on an Intel Lunar Lake laptop. The hang is reproducible across boots
and is not tied to a specific application - it occurs while the machine is
idle or after the GPU has been idle, and also under light desktop load (Xorg
+ Firefox).
At the point of the hang, the X server is stuck in uninterruptible sleep (D
state) inside the TTM page pool free path of the `xe` driver.

All other CPUs are idle in cpuidle_enter_state / intel_idle, so this is a
single-task deadlock in the TTM pool, not an interrupt storm.
The kernel is tainted `G U`; the `U` taint is expected and is a direct
consequence of passing the `xe.enable_*` module options on the command line
(the kernel logs "Setting dangerous option enable_psr - tainting kernel"
for each one). This is intentional and not part of the bug.
## What has already been ruled out
- CPU C-state involvement: the hang still occurs with `processor.max_cstate=1`
on the kernel command line. That workaround has since been removed.
- Interrupt storm: the NMI backtrace shows no CPU spinning in the GPU
interrupt handler; all other CPUs are idle.
- Display power features: PSR, Panel Replay, FBC and SAGV are all already
disabled via module parameters and the hang persists.
## Suspected root cause / upstream fixes believed to be missing
1. **Lunar Lake GGTT PTE write-ordering (missing FORCEWAKE)**
On LNL, batched `writeq()` updates to GGTT page-table entries can fill the
CPU store buffer, after which a subsequent MMIO write can block
indefinitely. The fix is a patch series ("drm/xe/ggtt: hold FORCEWAKE while
updating GGTT PTEs on LNL") that keeps a FORCEWAKE reference held across
the PTE write batches. This series was posted to dri-devel around May 2026
and does not appear to be present in 7.3.0-9-generic.
2. **DPT allocated from stolen memory**
The `xe` driver can allocate the display page table (DPT) from stolen
memory and write PTEs without an adequate force-wake, which on LNL can
cause trace-less hard resets/hangs. The out-of-tree/distribution fix that
prevents DPT from being allocated out of stolen memory (tracked upstream as
drm/xe issue #7513) is carried by e.g. CachyOS but is not in the Ubuntu
kernel. Kernel log also shows:
xe 0000:00:02.0: [drm] Initial FB size exceeds half of stolen, discarding
3. **GuC g2h worker flush on response timeout**
(`drm/xe/guc/ct: Flush g2h worker in case of g2h response timeout`,
commit 22ef43c78647dd37b0dafe2182b8650b99dbbe59.) This one is believed to
already be backported into this kernel, but is listed for completeness
because it is part of the same LNL idle/wedge symptom cluster.
Note on the above: the exact commit IDs have changed during review upstream,
so please treat the patch *titles* as authoritative rather than the hashes.
## Request
Please consider backporting to the Ubuntu kernel (7.3.0-9-generic and/or the
current HWE kernel):
- the LNL GGTT FORCEWAKE patch series, and
- the fix that stops the DPT from being allocated from stolen memory
(drm/xe issue #7513),
both of which are required for stable operation of `xe` on Lunar Lake.
## Reproducing
Hang reproduces reliably on this machine after roughly 15-25 minutes of
uptime, typically while idle or shortly after the GPU has gone idle. Triggering
GPU buffer allocation after an idle period (e.g. opening a new tab in Firefox,
starting a GL application) appears to be sufficient.
## Workarounds currently in use
- `xe.enable_psr=0 xe.enable_panel_replay=0 xe.enable_fbc=0 xe.enable_sagv=0`
on the kernel command line (reduces frequency of the hang, does not fix it).
