Public bug reported: Since the update of libfreerdp3-3 (and libfreerdp-client3-3 / libfreerdp-server3-3) from 3.5.1+dfsg1-0ubuntu1.5 to 3.32.1+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 on 2026-10-24, new RDP connections to gnome-remote-desktop (46.3-0ubuntu1.2) intermittently hang. The client stays at "Securing connection to remote PC..." and never reaches the desktop. Restarting only the user service "gnome-remote-desktop" always cures it immediately.
The hang was not seen before this update on this machine (the service had been in daily use). gnome-remote-desktop itself is unchanged since 2026-04-23. A possibly related upstream report: https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/issues/13583 "Regression in 3.32.1: GNOME Remote Desktop hangs with Windows App on macOS after HYBRID_EX / Early User Auth". Same library version, same client, same client-side symptom. The reporter there is on Arch-based CachyOS with GNOME Remote Desktop 50.2, and their connection fails every time; here it is intermittent. The workaround there was downgrading FreeRDP to 3.31.1. STEPS TO REPRODUCE (as observed, not a deterministic recipe) 1. Machine: NVIDIA DGX Spark class (arm64), DGX OS 7.6.0 on Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, GNOME Remote Desktop enabled (RDP, port 3389, systemd user service). 2. Connect from Microsoft Windows App for macOS (current Mac App Store version) using an .rdp file with audio playback enabled (audiomode:i:0). 3. Use the session for a while, then end it (close the window, or the network drops). 4. Reconnect after a short time. Sometimes (several times in one afternoon) the client hangs at "Securing connection to remote PC". Observation: the hangs followed sessions in which audio playback was active (a session without audio did not hang; a session ended by a network drop was also followed by a hang). This is a small sample and not proven. EXPECTED: the new connection completes and the desktop appears. ACTUAL: the client hangs at "Securing connection". The server log shows the connection attempt ending with "BIO_read retries exceeded" and "ERRCONNECT_CONNECT_TRANSPORT_FAILED [0x0002000D]" followed by "[RDP] Network or intentional disconnect, stopping session". While hung the service is idle: its threads are all waiting, there are no leftover TCP connections on port 3389, CPU use is near zero. After "systemctl --user restart gnome-remote-desktop" the next connection works. WORKAROUND: systemctl --user restart gnome-remote-desktop (does not close the desktop session, only the RDP service). Full logs of the incidents can be attached: incident times 11:29, 12:37 and 12:50 local time, UTC+8.) WHAT IS NOT KNOWN - The root cause is not proven. The timing fits the libfreerdp3 update; audio playback (and the pipewire warning above) may be involved. A downgrade has not been tried because the library is shared with other packages. - The affected-client list is not tested beyond Windows App for macOS. - Whether this is the same bug as FreeRDP issue 13583 is not confirmed. NOTE: the apport "UpgradeStatus: probably fresh install" line is wrong; this is an upgraded system (installed 2025-11-05, packages upgraded 2026-10-24). Kernel: Linux 7.0.0-1019-nvidia aarch64. I can run any debug command or provide FreeRDP trace logs (WLOG_LEVEL=DEBUG) if the maintainers say how.
