Public bug reported:
Description:
During automated validation of an Ubuntu 26.10 Desktop VM on VMware ESXi,
hot-adding a PVRDMA adapter resulted in a missing RDMA device.
The guest kernel logged “failed to get vmxnet3 device“ from vmw_pvrdma before
the VMXNET3 driver initialization messages appeared. The associated VMXNET3
Ethernet link subsequently came up, but the validation test reported that no
new RDMA device was detected.
Environment:
Guest OS: Ubuntu 26.10 Desktop
Architecture: x86_64
Kernel: 7.3.0-9-generic
Kernel build: #9-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC, Mon Oct 5 10:38:02 UTC 2026
Guest drivers involved: vmw_pvrdma(AB97F2B4F5D1F62BF4FA20E) and
vmxnet3(1.9.0.0-k)
Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot an Ubuntu 26.10 Desktop VM in a VMware environment configured to
support PVRDMA and the default network adaptor is E1000E.
2. Hot-add a PVRDMA adapter while the VM is running.
3. Inspect the guest kernel log and check whether a new RDMA device has been
registered, using rdma link show or /sys/class/infiniband/.
The failure was observed during automated testing. The exact reproduction
frequency has not yet been established.
Expected result:
The hot-added PVRDMA adapter initializes and registers an RDMA device once its
paired VMXNET3 device is available.
Actual result:
The vmw_pvrdma driver reports that it cannot obtain the paired VMXNET3 device.
VMXNET3 initialization subsequently proceeds and its Ethernet link comes up,
but the expected new RDMA device is not detected.
