Private security bug reported:
[Impact]
linux-azure-nvidia 6.8.0-1051.54 (noble, SRU cycle 2026.10.26, tracker LP:
#2171692)
does not boot on Azure arm64 instances. After rebooting into the new kernel the
VM never
becomes reachable again and has to be force-rebooted from the Azure side. Both
Ampere
Altra (Neoverse-N1) and Azure Cobalt (Neoverse-N2) instances are affected.
The previous version, 6.8.0-1049.52, boots fine on the same instances.
[Test case]
1. Create a noble arm64 VM on Azure (tested: Standard_D2ps_v5 / Ampere and
Standard_D2ps_v6 / Cobalt, noble 24.04.5 marketplace image).
2. Enable ppa:canonical-kernel-team/ppa and install
linux-image-6.8.0-1051-azure-nvidia and
linux-modules-6.8.0-1051-azure-nvidia.
3. Set GRUB_DEFAULT=saved, keep the stock kernel as the saved entry, and boot
once into
6.8.0-1051-azure-nvidia with grub-reboot.
4. Reboot.
Expected: the VM comes back running 6.8.0-1051-azure-nvidia.
Actual: the VM never comes back (no ssh for 20+ minutes). A forced reboot
returns to the
saved fallback kernel. The failed boot leaves no entries in the persistent
journal and
nothing in pstore, so it dies before the root filesystem is mounted read-write.
[Results]
| Kernel | Ampere (N1) | Cobalt (N2) |
|------------------------------------------|-------------|-------------|
| linux-azure-nvidia 6.8.0-1049.52 | boots | boots |
| linux-azure-nvidia 6.8.0-1051.54 | hangs | hangs |
| linux-azure 6.8.0-1073.82 (parent, 4K) | not tested | boots |
