Sorry, i forgot: If you dont want to UPgrade many packages, you could allways DOWNgrade the dri and glx Drivers. You will find these packages at http://packages.debian.org/etch/libs/ . The packages from here http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/libs/ are maybe the same, but i didn't test these packages.
