Thank you for your bug report. There are two different ways of opening
images in Ristretto : "Open" which just opens a single file, and "Open
folder" which loads a whole folder and shows files as greyed. Are you
sure you try with the "Open" menu and not with the "Open Folder" menu ?
For me, everything is ok.
