It sounds likely that 121801 is relevant. In that bug it says that
nVidia designed the hardware to disable the reinitialization code after
boot. The way to fix it is to replicate the reinitialization sequence
code done in the binary nvidia driver -- a development activity beyond
what we can feasibly do for Ubuntu at this time. Marking as wishlist
for now.
