Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu (and Kubuntu) menus have icons next to virtually every entry.
Most human interface guidelines recommend only placing icons next to
menu entries when the icon is instantly identifiable, i.e. the user can
identify the menu entry using the icon faster than they would be able to
read the text if the icon were not there. Perhaps it would be possible
to cut back on the icons slightly?

In fact this applies to many (most?) Gnome and KDE applications.
