I had libxml2 version 2.6.0 and 2.6.30 installed. The symlink /usr/local/lib/libxml2.so pointed to the 2.6.0 version of libxml2. Making the symlink point to the 2.6.30 solved the problem.
Since I upgraded my machine from Dapper to Edgy to Feisty to Gutsy, shouldn't the upgrade process take of the libxml2 version as well?
