Note that this problem seems to be in the kernel, not alsa-driver,
unless that package is somehow included in the kernel.  Sound still
works fine in 2.6.24-3.  Setting back to confirmed, unless someone can
explain why this issue is not fixed by a standard apt-get upgrade.  I
haven't done anything with module-assistant or alsa-source, so I don't
think that is relevant to the issue of sound being broken in all kernels
after 2.6.24.3.
