I have the same problem on my Toshiba Tecra M9. It works fine with the nv driver. With the nvidia driver it only works on tty, not for X11. ref.: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=100494&page=3 Tested this with hardy live cd (which has the latest nvidia driver) and it is not fixed there, for me.
