Public bug reported:

Hello there,

I'm reporting an issue I've been having from Feisty to Hardy. The issue
shows in any installed Release, but does not show on LiveCD's.

Population:

Machine 1:
Core2Duo E6400, 3GB Ram, Nvidia 8400GS, 2xSATA HD, PATA DVDRW LG. ASUS M221W
screen, Logitech wave desktop, Hardy 32bit.

Machine 2:
AMD64 3200, 512 MB Ram, Nvidia 6600, 2xSATA HD, PATA DVDRW, PATA DVD,
Philips170 screen, Logitech mx 100 desktop, Feisty 32bit.

Machine 3:
Core2Duo E5400, 2GB RAM, Intel G965, 2xSATA HD, SATA DVDRW, ASUS M221W screen,
Microsoft Wireless Comfort desktop, Feisty 32bit.

Machine 4:
AMD64 3200, 1GB Ram, Nvidia 6600, 2xSATA HD, PATA DVDRW, PATA DVD, Philips170
screen, Microsoft Wireless confort desktop, Feisty server amd64.

Machine 3 and 4 share keyboard and mouse through DLink KVM.

Compiz is installed and running on all but the server.
SCIM is configured multilanguage on Core2Duo's.
All systems are updated up to date in their own release.

The issue observed is:
i1- Almost every day, randomly, active window turns grey. While on greyed out
there is no way to act on the toolbar, menus, or info inside the window. Is a
temporary lock of the app.
i1-1- Sometimes app recovers and I can keep working for another while.
Sometimes it does not.

i2- If it does not recover we have the following possibilities:
i2-1- Force quit the app. Sometimes it works (Top panel has the ForceQuit
added) so the app quits and I can keep working for a while.

i2-2- Force quit is not reachable. Top panel has gone weird so has gone weird
the whole system. just apps whose windows are not greyed up can keep working.
i2-2-1- Icons disappear from top panel menubar when pulling down.
i2-2-2- There is no way to select any app from the menus. Produces any of these
errors:
i2-2-2-1- "The son process 'name of app' could not be launched due to an
input/output error"
i2-2-2-2- "The son process 'name of app' could not be launched due to
permission error"
i2-2-3- There is no way to save unsaved work even in still not greyed out
windows. Errors i2221 and i2222.
i2-2-4- Ctrl+Alt+Backspace restarts GDM but does not solve the issue.
i2-2-4-1- Relogging into gnome logs in the same status before the
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace but mostly relogs to a screen with the desktop background
only (no icons, no panels). There is no way to do nothing, not even right click
and launch a terminal.
i2-2-4-2- Trying another TTY and loging in console mode is not possible.
i2-2-4-2-1- At the login prompt I type username, press return, but the
'password' prompt does not appear, and the 'username' prompt comes back again.
i2-2-4-2-2- The only way to get the system back to work is by hardswitching.
i2-2-5- There is no way to print screen to capture the issue as Errors i2221
and i2222 appear when saving if Screenshot hopefuly came out and took the
capture.

i3- Restarting produces hard disk errors that get "autosolved" as
startup process finally does a fsck and fixes hd error.

i4- Reinstalling Fresh System reformating "/" and "/boot" does not solve
the issue.

i5- I Logout Dialog could be launched, it lacks icons. Pressing any of
the options turns into a console screen that tells that daemons are
shutting down, but computer does not reach shutdown.

I've having this issue since December 1st 2007.

Any more info I could provide, let me know and I will send it as soon as
possible.
