This problem may be attributed to the use of Wireless drivers, as all the cases I know of (and on my laptop, using the proprietary Intel drivers) occur on installations with wireless internet access. Is it possible that the system waits for some call or response from the internet that it cannot receive as the nm-applet has not been loaded, and hence hangs for an undetermined amount of time...? (If required I can post any information necessary; at the moment I don't know what would be most helpful in resolving this problem :) )
