Dear Gregg, I tried but still the special effects are not available. By the way, the X server did not get the CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE signal, and I instead killed the X process.
I will try to install the 8.04 but I am afraid I will have no time for it until Friday... I'll keep you informed!
