Public bug reported:

some powerpc needs this module to be loaded so that the fans can start up when
heat is at a certain level. Right now, and so was it for every release I used
of ubuntu (since dapper for sure, maybe before) - the modules doesn't load
automatically on boot. I have to manually modprobe it, or add it to
/etc/modules.
I suspect many are running their machines without this module loaded and risk
overheating their hardware. Just as important is to use powernowd and
DynamicClocks for radeon - both of which are not default currently - but that's
another story/bug maybe. (powernowd used to be ok before hardy)
