Thanks for the quick response Travis.  I first upgraded the kernel, then 
found that there was not a new nvidia driver to match.  Today there was, 
so I upgraded that.  All the while I have been using the new kernel (now 
with the new nvidia package) which was the state when the error was 
generated.  Xcompmgr works in the meantime.  I'll send a screen of the 
desktop when I attempt to start compiz...the bottom 1/4 of the screen 
goes blank (and it is an edge, i.e. you cannot drag items into it, but 
new windows open into it, and you cannot access confirmation buttons, etc.).
