Public bug reported:

After uninstalling all compiz* packages from a default Ubuntu 7.10
installation logging in would leave you without any window manager.
Starting "metacity" from the terminal it works correctly (however, if I
abort it then with Ctrl+C I can no longer write into the terminal, nor
into any new terminal, to start it again). Adding "metacity" for
autostart on System -> Applications -> Session doesn't work.

After re-installing the removed Compiz packages everything works
correctly again.
