This is resolved in Hardy by (a) checking for sufficient free space
before installation and (b) removing directories from the target system
that would interfere with installation (and of course warning you about
this).

To upgrade from Ubuntu 5.10 to Ubuntu 6.06, the preferred and supported
method is to use the standard upgrade tools. If you must do a fresh
installation, then you must choose to format the target partition.
