after selecting the main US server, linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.24-10-generic was available and installed allright.

Even though this solved the problem for me, I seems that this relates to
a problem in the handling of the ubuntu mirrors: Why was the kernel
uploaded (including packages.gz) on this mirror,and made available,
*before* the restricted modules? Is that a mess up or a procedural
problem? Anyway, I'm closing this bug.
